In the area of the macula, the part responsible for central vision, the structure becomes damaged. There’s a gradual breakdown of the light-sensitive cells and supportive tissue. In “wet” AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula, leading to leakage and scarring. This can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated.
